I notice that his boots stay on in that clip - are we sure it's Phil Blake?

He used to tape up his boots rather than tie them. So they fell off a lot.

But he'd still have enough skill and pace to score, boots on or not.

I remember going to Headingley in 1988ish. For some reason Blake was driving himself and not on the team coach. We got to the ground very early and had a wander around, the Warrington team coach hadn't arrived and Blake was at the entrance trying to get in, some meathead steward didn't recognise him and wouldn't let him in. Me and my old man chatted with him, got an autograph etc. After that meathead let him through.

That was the game the Leeds fans were chanting for Sam Backo to come on from the bench. He arrived on the pitch to chants of "Backo, Backo..". Two minutes later Davidson had put him on his booty and he went off!

We won that day, Foz going in and out of Ettingshausen! Happy Days.

Didn't William Webb Ellis pick up the ball and run, someone should really tell Rugby Union.

What do you mean now? I'm sure both he and Davidson got the bird when they played against us.

I dont think Davidson or Blake ever played against Warrington for the Pies.
Remember that we played them on New Years Day and on Easter Monday in those days, they would have both returned home in time for the training leading up to the NRL kick-off.
Which of-course was our problem with them.

It was because of Phil Blake not being released for the semi-final against Wigan that Higham vowed we would never sign another player on a short term deal again!

Hence Warrington then signed NZ and Welsh Union converts!

And a decade and a half later we sign Joey! lol

I recall Blake punching the ball out of somebody's arm as they were about to break clear unopposed at Wilderspool. I am sure it was against us though.

That really was the double-edged sword of those days back then, wasn't it?

Compared to the overseas players we see today in the British game, who are mainly has-been's or journeymen, back then we had the privilige of seeing genuine world-class players playing in our very own league.

Wally Lewis at Wakefield, Garry Jack at Salford, Blake with us, Meninga at Saints, Kenny at Wigan....the list was endless, and I think we can count ourselves very lucky we were able to witness it!!.. :D
