Hey SEB

Thanks for the stats. It shows who actually working for the side and can highlight the unsung hero's, what they can't do is highlight the influence a creative player has on the game. Any thoughts on changing the system next year to take account of a players influence on the game? The stats showed Briers as our 3rd worst performer when in fact he had a great game whilst he was on.

Behave yourself, stats don't lie.

Actually how accurate are these stats and can we take them seriously :?:

Yeh, there is no way of developing a perfect system unfortunately. Opta don't record quality, just quantity. For example a superb Briers pass to Bridge (very noticeable at the time and again on the highlights) that sets him away to set up Hicks just doesn't register. Nor they record things like taking the ball at first receiver and distributing to the forwards. Nor completely unmeasurable stuff such as organising the line and creating doubt in the defence.

The way I look at it is - to get a full picture of how the team played, you need to use your own judgement during the game (taking mental notes at the time of good and bad things you see), consider other people's opinions, look at who scored and who set them up and then take a look at the stats as well. Only a combination of these things gives the full picture.

So, for me, against Huddersfield, I thought our forwards laid an excellent platform lead by Carvell, Morley, Vinnie and Westwood. The whole team contributed in it's structure, spirit and defence. And then the threequarters really did their job, with Bridge probably the best, lead excellently by Briers and Monaghan who I thought showed then can be a very good pairing, complementing each other very well with different skills and strengths.

All of this is a combination of the various sources.

Really don't know, we were going to try to get the guys who record them to come and speak to us at a Supporters Trust meeting but it fell through for various reason. Perhaps we could try again. Can be a bit of dry subject, but they may have some interesting stuff to tell us.

So these player performance stats are they based on actual Super League stats and your opinions/judgments of the players :?:

What i mean to say is, who comes up with the decision that Vinnie was the best weekly player :?:

Er, no, the stats are based on the Opta stats.

Is it not clear enough? If you read any stat attack column, all the weeky leader's stats are shown. Then read the explanation page - each stat is awarded a score, so that players can be consistently marked. The scoring system is my own, but all the stats come from Opta off the SL website, so it's as consistent as I can make it.

Oh and I didn't say Vinnie was best weekly player - I always use the phrase "weekly stat leader" or similar, for the reasons I've talked about above.

FWIW, my MOM for Sunday was Carvell.

Obviously everybody makes there own minds up of who is good and bad but it's interesting to note that most people feel Vinnie has been one of the worse players this year and yet he's 3rd in the overall table.
Put that with the fact that the majority of fans believe Briers is the best week in week out and can do no wrong yet he's exactly half way down the overall table.

As I say, it tells you different things. With Vinnie, I think it proves quite convincingly that people who say he is lazy or only does the fancy stuff are wrong. As for Briers, I think even his biggest fans realise he has his flaws - such as missing tackles occasionally and not having the pace he used to. However, anyone with a brain and an ounce of RL knowledge can also see the quality he brings to the side.
