I actually agree with you there.

Goulding would have been an excellent signing, an underrated player and undervalued by Noble and the Wigan club IMO.

He's young, and desperate for a first team opportunity to prove his ability, Smith could have worked wonders with him.

It's only on loan. Maybe Smith has his eyes on a permanent centre. Or two.

I'd have liked him on loan until the end of the season, but I'd have liked to have seen us kept our options open moving forward to 2010 onwards. I think Smith will be busy identifying players for 2010, off contract on so forth, I think Goulding is a good player, but we could perhaps do better.
