Something to play for? : Mon Mar 30, 2009 7:14 pm
It's probably odds on that we are likely to finish in the bottom three at the very best. So with the current situation being that there is no relegation who exactly is actually going to bother to shell out good money to travel to away games or indeed attend home games towards the end of the season when there is absolutely nothing at stake or to play for. It appears that fans are already deserting in large numbers when it comes to going to away games and it's only going to get worse given the present level of performances that we've witnessed coupled with the economic situation. This will not only apply to Salford but the other teams at the bottom whose only "motivation" will be to avoid the wooden spoon - although is that an actual trophy?
I admire anyone who travels home and away to support their side through thick and thin but with no threat of relegation where exactly is the motivation for any player or player's to really play their heart's out for the club and equally so what is in it for the fans who are inevitably served up with a raft of totally meaningless fixtures that arn't cheap to attend.
We more than anyone deserved our elevation back to Super League on the back of our clean sweep last season but I would much rather we were playing with the threat of relegation than the current situation we find ourselves in. At least we could look forward to some crucial games which actually had some relevance or purpose.
