For years we have struggled to bring through halfbacks, and heavily relied on imports to fill the void, or switching players to play there (Sculthorpe, Sinfield etc) currently in Super League we have the following players who are playing.

Jacob Trueman
Jake Connor
Chris Atkin
Danny Richardson
Lee Gaskill
Sam Powell
Jake Shorrocks
Danny Walker
Gareth O'Brien
Tom Gilmore
Declan Patton
Harvey Livett
Ryan Hampshire

Together with established halfbacks like

Sam Tomkins
Gareth Widdop
Jonny Lomax
Luke Gale
Kevin Brown
George Williams
Stefan Ratchford
Richie Myler
Danny Brough

Trueman looks like the best half back prospect in this country for years. Every time I watch him I think “wow!” Can’t believe he’s only 19. When was the last time we saw a 19 year old look every bit a fully established, fully experienced half back? Maybe since Danny McGuire broke through?

We have the quantity, but not the quality. Most of those players are average at best or unproven.
To be fair, even the NRL are struggling to produce HBs of their previous standard.

I really hope we don't go down that route. I'd rather lose with Williams/Richardson than win with Hastings

As a red & white fan I have watched Atkin grow in stature under Tim Sheens guidance, what was a gamble of a signing from Swindon has turned out a gem. I think in another two seasons he will mature into a very very good player & possible international.

As far as Hampshire is concerned he has the ability, Wigan dont pay big money for rubbish youngsters.

Ryan’s problem seems to be Ryan - I can’t be certain but he always strikes me as a player chasing the dosh rather than success, hence him failing to settle at a club and take the HB spot.

He’s getting his chance at Wakey but anyone can see that at 24 he’s clearly lost valuable years. He’s quick and has loads of tricks but his game management is poor and his last tackles options are at times pathetic.

He needs to buckle down at a club and learn his trade and if he does so and finally reaches the steller potential he showed as a junior he may be in contention in a few years when he’s about 26 so he’s still got a chance but it’s very much up to him.
