Aah - my bad. I'd seen a post with a link to the HDM saying words to that effect but when I tried it I got swamped with ads and didn't have the patience to read it. Hadn't realised it was from back then.
Time will tell on the first point. Every player's different, Merrin may be the exemplary pro who, having signed, does his absolute best for his new employer.
Was the money needed? The side was good enough to win a GF in 2017. But we now have a new ground to fill and need an x factor to make sure the crowds rock up. Also, there's the intriguing possibility that GH is trying to send a message to certain rival chairmen who feel they have a better grasp on how the game should be encouraged to flourish. Pretty sure Pearson has only this week promised the Hull fans some major signings in the coming weeks so maybe the stakes are being raised?
Merrrin is coming to leeds having pretty much done the lot in NRL, this 4 year deal will probably be his last so don't think commitment will be an issue he probably would only have 2-3 years left in NRl as a top earner anyway. delighted we have signed without out a doubt one of the best forwards in the world even and still relatively at his peak.
In the wake of Hull FC's record defeat at Warrington Wolves, a seventh successive loss for the side, club chairman and owner Adam Pearson has launched a stinging attack on the attitude and application of some players. Pearson has warned some of the squad that they will be heading for the exit door, regardless of if they signed a new deal this season or not, and has promised a revamp of the side ahead of next season. The chairman says complacency has set in and he's about to upset the squad, while also saying any players that don't want to be at the club can go straight away, with Jordan Abdull's transfer request not sitting well with Pearson. Hull Live sports editor James Smailes speaks to the FC owner about his frustration and why a change in transfer policy is now going to be implemented. James Smailes: When you get performances like Wakefield last month and Warrington on Thursday night, what does that do for your philosophy in terms of recruitment and keeping the same side? Adam Pearson: Thursday night, in fact the last two months of the season have been totally unacceptable for the club and the supporters. We had seven key players missing on Thursday night and we will now be adding three or four proper signings, not youth players, so that come January we will have 10 or 11 players to go back into what will fundamentally be our best team. We are going to move some players out and bring some new ones in and completely refresh the squad. We will move players on who we feel have let the club down over the past two months. Obviously some of those players have contracts and if needs be and they don’t want to go we will send them to play dual registration at Doncaster and they can stay there. We’ll then sign three or four players who take us into a new financial level.
James Smailes:
Have an exclusive online shortly with chairman Adam Pearson which Hull FC fans won’t want to miss.
“Complacency has set in and I can tell the players that complacency is about to have a bomb thrown into it. There will be changes.” Have to say, known Adam a long time and interviewed him many times and cannot remember him being more angry and feeling let down than he was today. He's seething and feels some players are not paying back the trust and investment club has given them. He's come out swinging.

Whilst we won the GF in 2017 that looked a long long long way off mid 2016 when signings for 2017 are usually being made. We sat in 12th place in the that summer and do people really think we had this money sat their to spend and just couldn’t be bothered and went for Cory Aston and Jack Ornondroyd instead?
3 things Hetherington has been opposed to for a few years now, marquee signings, raising the salary cap and running a reserve team. All cost money and as soon as the ground being finished one of those changes and I fully expect us to flip flop on our stance towards the other 2 issues in the not to distant future. Hell even if they thought signings weren’t necessary why weren’t we giving the likes of Watkins and Hall marquee spots to keep them away from any potential bids from RU or the NRL.

Flip flop? Given the power shift, I suspect the reserves and SC issues will be decided upon by Elstone and the "big 11" regardless of whatever stance GH cares to adopt. But he may wish to show who's boss regardless of whatever rules they decide upon.
Can't answer your question re Watkins and Hall as I don't know what they earn/ed at Leeds. Maybe it was felt the notion of one or 2 marquee players would undermine morale amongst the others. Either way, I personally wouldn't offer marquee terms to either a winger or a centre however good they were though that's not the same as saying Leeds took that stance.
