I always rated Hampshire at Wigan. He seemed the perfect foil for Williams but when his chance came to play in his preferred position, because of a long term injury, he had already had a major dummy spit and been sent out on loan. He seems to be a player who has a very fixed idea of his own worth that is not matched by his progress. I could see him playing for the promoted team and doing a very good job if he can match his expectations to those of his employer.
If Hampshire was Australian or over 30 he would’ve gotten his contract instantly.
