I'd prefer to measure success via a combination of attendances and their associated receipts (gate/ticket money) but I only have access to the former. The clubs and the RFL have access to both, which is another reason why you ought to be asking them the question rather than me.

You are right. However, as turnover and profits are readily available in the public domain via company accounts, you need to be more thorough in your investigations.
