I think there's a massive element of sides putting the cue on the rack. Doing enough to win and not playing with an intensity for 80 minutes because, why do they need to? Winning 30-10 is the same as winning 60-10. Coaches may reat pivots once the job is done.
In the old days there was a lot less disruption so teams could rack up big scores. What we have now is a lot of stop starts with time wasting, scrums, penalties to touch, feigning injuries goal line drop outs must take at least 10 mins out of the game.
