No, but it means that it can't be exploited anymore....
I was in NZ over Christmas and there seems to be a lot of this "symbolic gesture" stuff going on. There was a massive stretch of coastline handed over to the Maori's when I was there, which effectively gave them the right to close the beach if they wanted. There was also a section of lake Taupo closed by the Maori council after the death of a young girl on the lake.
I am not a Kiwi, but I get the impression after spending a month out there that the NZ government are keen to try to rectify a lot of the wrongs done to the Maoris over the last 200 odd years.

And it also says the AB must pay a hefty price for actually doing the Haka.So the same would apply to kiwi RL aswell in that case?

We're coming to make some noise!

No it would cost a hefty price if they were to trademark it something in which they have faild to do many times.

It has been given to them as a gesture and is to try and stop companies using it as marketing. I dont think they expect the tribe to stop the NZ national teams doing it before kick off.

I do however remember Sam Stewart a Rovers player in the 90's teaching the Juinior Robins (I was one at the time!) how to do the Haka but explained that each tribe had its own so if this is the case how can they stop anyone using one that is modified?

It's like Bruce Forsyth asking the British government to stop anyone using his catchphrase "nice to see you to see you..."!

There are many variations of the haka...IIRC the AB's have a very unpleasant one they reserve for certain teams that involves a throat slitting action at the end.
I understand the NZ government trying to protect a cultural icon from exploitation and I think it is very clever putting it in the hands of the Maoris...as anybody who tried to use it would not only be breaking the law, but also would be seen as trying to exploit a minority....
