If the report is accurate, you still have to question why the owners have allowed someone to wait until the end of October to decide if he can be bothered sticking around or not. If he has said no (and we don't know if he has at the moment), then it's left the club right up a certain waterway with no propelling instrument.

I'm hoping they're going to announce he's not staying personally. It was mentioned on another thread that Chalmers only wants players this time around who want to be at the club, rather than those who just don't have anywhere else to be. Why should that be different for the head coach?

Exactly nobody in their right mind would leave it so late in the day,
I think it is a bit of a marketing ploy when next week its BOOM! "look who is stayin" now please buy a season ticket.

Absolutely Hamster, I concur with all of that.

I've not yet got my head around why folk think Toovey is some kind of Aussie demi-god as a coach - he's not. If he were half as good as some seem to think he is he'd be signed up in the NRL/ SOO scene by now. That's why he came here in the first place, if we remember, he wasn't in the game at all when he first came ove, so why would they be fighting for his signature now? We've just wasted a month or so, either with getting a coach or getting an assistant - it's not what we needed before training starts.

If he doesn't come back I'll wish him all the best and we can crack on get on with our promotion push, but, for good or bad, I strongly suspect he'll be back.

Agree Bulliac he still has to prove himself at our level. After assistant coaching at Manly and being appointed as head coach they came to within one game of the grand final but lost to Melbourne. As some would say, he inherited the team so not his success. Next season, the NRL Grand Final. So agreed, he may be a demi god as a coach in Oz, but here, in the rain and mud and a patched together plus loans squad he has had his problems. So the real test of his abilities at the level of competition and therefore players we find ourselves in, is what he does with a squad of pretty much his own choice and a pre season of more than one day.

I am not so sure that we need an NRL playoff final coach supervising the next few weeks of our squads fitness regime, as HC demands, rather our conditioning coach. Chalmers is the man in charge, not Toovey, and if he is happy to be elsewhere whilst our team go through their fitness assessment and programme design and implementation over the next few weeks, then I trust him. And Cha determines the way he wants us to play, so if Toovey does not stay he will appoint another coach that appears to match his requirements and ambitions, whether Oz demi god or Gloz full god. The idea that our success for the whole season depends upon one man being at Tong for the next few weeks is just incredulous.

I don't think anyone has said that and if they did it'd just be hyperbole.

Generally speaking head coaches are present during pre season training as they're ultimately responsible for the team. It's important they're present for plenty of reasons that you don't need me to list.

As it is I expect our head coach to be in place fairly soon.

Yes, the point is largely about being the one that assembles the squad, brings in the players who fit his tactics and stategies and all the stuff that goes along with it. The earlier the person who's going to be in charge is in place, the sooner all that gets sorted and the happier everyone tends to be. I don't think anyone has suggested it's about shedding those post-season pounds or about a period of a couple of weeks.

Today's T&A saying that we aren't offering a deal to Brandon Wilkinson.

Seems a bit strange to me. He's playing for Scotland in the World Cup tomorrow and showed plenty of promise last season. But it appears he's not even worth an offer?

It said he "failed to earn a new contract" and that the club "allowed his deal to run out". I agree it seems a bit odd as he looked willing enough to me.

Magrin still un-signed apparently.

I could understand if we weren't willing to meet his demands which have likely risen now he's played some first team games and got an international call up. If he was being unreasonable etc.

But to not offer a contract at all seems quite odd. He didn't necessarily look ready for regular first team just yet, but he certainly looked to have some promise.

Maybe he was offered part time and didn't fancy it?

I would also understand that. But the wording of the article seems to suggest he wasn't offered anything.
