Well the thing is, at the stage when he was so full of optimism, I suspect he might only have known who the interested parties were and how much they were worth etc.

You could have someone like Irvine - worth a few bob - show serious interest in the club. Petit gets all excited. Irvine then turns around and says actually mate, I only want it once it's been liquidated.
You could have the wealthiest guy in the world bidding for the club but at the end of the day you can't stop him offering only pennies to the creditors. These guys are rich for a reason - they aren't mugs.
