We've been through it often enough, you might think, but we never actually learn anything do we?. Other than nothing is ever for the better. It's like like a long, dark tunnel, filled with smoke and mirrors which we have to go through, but we're unable to see either where we are or what is happening. Every now and then we are offered maps from soothsayers who tell us, "don't worry, everything will be alright, soon someone will come to lead us into the sunshine, but we can't tell you how we know or much about the sunshine , except it will be very bright", but, on looking, the map isn't for our tunnel so is no use, and anyway there are plenty others who all seem to know how it will end. they all have different ideas though, so maybe they know nothing either?
Then, lo a voice from above announces that all will be told on the 'morrow. Then then we hear nothing more and we realise that tomorrow never comes. Suddenly, when all seems lost, the chief mystic, from the team of mystics who are running this charade arrives. Will he pull something out of his hat, like a rabbit, or maybe a place in the championship? And then we can jump up and down and rejoice and say the saviour is born - even though there is a condition imposed by the RFL that we must forfeit the rabbit's hutch and all the money we'd saved for the rabbit food. . Or will he say, "soz, nothing I can do here lads 'n' lasses, we'll have to treat you like an old clock and wind everything up".
