Wembley 1966 : Wed Jan 13, 2016 8:26 pm
I'm sure over the coming months a lot of the media will be recalling England's World Cup victory of the year but for us older Saints fans a much more important event had taken place at Wembley in May.Saints had trounced Wigan for the second time in the Challenge Cup Final.
The week later they completed a Four Trophy haul by winning the Play off final at Station Road Swinton, the only trophy we didn't win was the BBC floodlit trophy.
I know in recent years teams winning the Double has become more often but in 1966 it hadn't been done for about 30 years.
I'm no historian just working from memory so if I'm wrong please correct me but the Wembley team was
Frankie Barrow
Vollenhoven
Murphy
Benyon
Killeen
Harvey
Tommy Bishop
Watson
Sayer
Halsall
French
Warlow
Mantle
(no subs then)
I appreciate the game has changed over the years, player's roles are different but for me that's one of the best Saints teams ever.
I don't know if the club has any plans to commemorate that season but it's certainly a worthy event.......
maybe a special edition shirt ( it was the beginning of the permanent switch to the Red Vee). There maybe contractual issues but it would be good to see the current team play a home game in that kit on the nearest appropriate date.
Or maybe if the club or one the local newspapers could produce a commemorative brochure.
I'm sure there's other members on here with great memories of that season.
