3 new rules : Fri Dec 28, 2012 9:07 am
I like the 3 rules that were tried at the leeds wakey game

1 -Teams with scrum-head and feed have the option to leave the loose forward out of the pack to create an extra man , with these being a joke the advantage has gone to the defence, with the FB filling in at 13 for a run back into position, and second rowers just peeling into the line this rule gives back to attack which can only be a good thing

2 -if the ball is kicked dead from a team's own half, the opposition receive a 40-metre tap. , if you put in a good kick chase and then keep them in their own half where is the justice for them then to unskilfully blast the ball down and field of play and get you to line up on the 20, this i also believes encourages a better kicking game and acts as a reward for good defence

3 - Charge-downs do not result in a reset of the tackle count - i remember when we beat wire at the HJ last year ball in hand we started wall but our kicking game was less the good. we were in poor positions and kicked late and a good rushing wire defence charged down 2 or 3 kicks but we regained the ball every time and get a second set of 6, helping us with a great start in the game which was the difference in the game, surely rewarding poor attack and punishing good / unlucky defence

anyone got any feelings on these?

I like the ball being kicked dead rule, I said all last season that it needed looking at. To many teams (especially Leeds) was kicking the ball dead in order to regroup and get the defence set. Kicking the ball dead like that, takes away the attacking option for fullbacks and wingers.

The scrum rule is silly IMO. It's like something the yanks would dream up.

Not fussed on the charge Down rule.

SAINTS THE ORIGINAL AND PERENNIAL CHEATS

For sale full Saints kit (circa 1989). Shirts in pristine condition, but shorts badly soiled.

For 27 - 0 you get a trophy
For 75 - 0 you get sod all.

Wigan had eight in a row
Saints have five in a row

Re: 3 new rules : Fri Dec 28, 2012 10:05 am
As you know I've been banging on about the kicking the ball dead rule for years. I would have taken it one step further and had the tap from where the ball was kicked.

The standing out of the scrum rule is a joke. It's artificially trying to compensate for lack of creativity in the backs (particularly at 6 and 7)

good job we have no problem with a lack of creativity at saints.

let them use this rule in most freindlys it wont mess up pre season, its only going to be couple of extra set plays to learn and see how it works, the real problem i do see is the world cup, if we need this in the SL to break down the better teams what are England going to do when they face Oz and NZ?

i do like the rule, but i not 100% for the good of the long term game

Leeds are the biggest offenders of kicking the ball dead. It takes the excitement of a good attacking fullback or wingers having the opportunity running into broken play which is what fans want to see. It also owns the game down.

The scrum rule is a joke, its something that the Americans would dream up. The whole scrum is a farce and this makes it worse.

I've got no thoughts on the charge down rule to be honest, I'm happy with the old and the new rule.

I think that's a bit extreme. I'd say you can gain a maximum of 20 metres by hoofing it dead so if you do it from more than 40 metres the tap is 20 metres upfield from where it was kicked.

It's not really the yardage gain as such for me it's the fact you get to kill time and get a controlled restart that allows you to set your defence up perfectly - all for the price of a massive hoof. I had a discussion a while back on Redvee (http://www.redvee.net/forums/showthread ... dead/page2) about it with some numpty who really didnt understand the point at all.
