Makinson - Any good? : Wed Mar 21, 2012 11:31 am
I posted this on the Leeds team thread, but I think it deserves more discussion.

'TMak' certainly has a lot of credit with the fans, seems to be a 'superstar'. But I must say bar the odd moment he's been completely anonymous since he broke into the first team squad. IMO he doesn't contribute nearly enough to be in the first team on the wing.

Does he have this reputation purely because he doesn't make the same glaring errors our other (Pathetic) wingers and centre make? The stats certainly back that up...

Foster:

Career Super League games 41
Career Super League tries 29
Career Super League tries per game 0.71
Career Super League clean breaks per game 0.73
Career Super League metres per appearance 64.98
Career Super League metres per carry 7.79
Career Super League errors per appearance 0.92

Makinson:

Career Super League games 22
Career Super League tries 7
Career Super League tries per game 0.32
Career Super League clean breaks per game 0.18
Career Super League metres per appearance 55.09
Career Super League metres per carry 6.69
Career Super League errors per appearance 0.77

The only stat where Makinson is in Foster's league is errors.

I'm surprised how the stats stack up. Personally, I'd have Makinson over either Gardner or Foster. He came of age in the grand final and was arguably our best player in that match. He's done nothing wrong this season and for me, has performed better than both of the other choices on the wing. I'd have him and Gardner as our starting wingers. What the stats don't show is that Makinson is more reliable under the high ball and is quicker than Foster. His tackling is streets ahead of Foster as well. Put it one way, if he'd been on Foster's wing on Saturday, I'd imagine Royce would still be in a job because we'd have won that game.

Last year we got a lot of good clean ball left to Meli who put a lot on the plate for Foster.
The right never seemed to get nearly as much decent ball. I would suggest that is a massive factor in the stats you're quoting.

I think it shows that Foster isn't nearly as bad as is made out, rather than Makinson being poor.

Yup. Good points. Just looked now and Foster missed 16% of his career Super League tackles, Makinson missed only 9%. So Makinson is better defensively. This just supports what I was saying, he doesn't make the errors that make the fans criticise a player, but does he do enough when we've got the ball?

Gardner's for the last 3 seasons (To make it a fair comparison):

Tries per game 0.62
Clean breaks per game 0.56
Metres per appearance 79.7
Metres per carry 6.66
Errors per appearance 0.97
Missed tackle 17%

Interesting...

IMO Makinson is quality. Safe hands, fast, great defence and looks more athletic than most of our youngsters. IIRC isn't he a year younger than Foster?

What counts as errors? Dropped high balls, dropped passes. what else?

All this thread proves is that stats can be misleading.

I'm struggling to grasp how Makinson, who has yet to reach maturation, is supposed to generate remarkable stats playing week-to-week against fully grown adults.

Oh, I forgot - we're back in Charlie Sheen land.
