This year, referees will signal ‘six again’ to reward the attack with another set in position opposed to blowing the penalty and stopping play. As it stands in the NRL, the referee will blow the penalty and the recipient will either tap or kick for touch while the new rule will allow play to continue with the tackles added to the count forcing the opposition to defend for another set. Sound plausible, I often wonder what the point of the tap is especially when a quick tap is attempted only for the ref to stop play cos the defence is not in position.

This seems like a good move, as often you see teams cynically giving away a penalty to slow down play and allow defences to reset.

Wigan were a bugger for it last year, but all teams do it to some extent.

As soon as someone split them, they would lie on and surrender the penalty. The ref would then stop play call the player over. This would allow the defence to reset and get organised and thereby kill the momentum.

This way a ref just calls 6 more on the fly and the penalised team will still be on the backfoot trying to get reset.

Haven't read the article but I take it this is when you're pressuring the opposition? Wouldn't be much use in your own half, rather kick for touch.

It is just for the NRL all stars game at the start of next month, just one of a few tweeks to the rules for that one match only.

Be interesting if it happened on the first tackle, would you then have 11 tackles left?

Thats certainly how i interpret it.

Otherwise people will give penalties away on the first or second tackle and it will only penalise a team by an extra tackle or two.

It's going to confuse the refs if it's on the fist tackle. How will they count to 11?

They're drafting in some refs from Wigan who can count to 12 without taking their shoes and socks off

That could happen now though. I think the point is that there won't be a break in play. They'll simply wave 6 more like they would from a knock down on the last.

1st tackle
2nd tackle - penalty conceded
Break
1st tackle

will now become

1st tackle
2nd tackle - penalty conceded - play on waved
1st tackle

That way, as someone earlier said, a team can't give away an intentional penalty to get their line reset as the ref is simply wiping the tackle count meaning that there'll still be players out of position and offside and the attacking team quite rightly still have an advantage.
