Keiron Purtill : Mon Jun 20, 2011 2:57 pm
Could he be a candidate to challenge Wello for the position of scapegoat vacated by Kyle recently? I remember Simmonds repeatedly saying a while back that the defense is solely the work of Purtill.

Well, our defense is shocking.

Its SIMMONS btw.

And Simmons only gave credit to Purtill for a couple of weeks' work on defence. He didn't say that Purtill was working on defence per se. He might be though but even if he was, Friday's performance doesn't necessarily reflect that work. We weren't at the races in any department on Friday. I don't think that was a reflection of anyone's coaching; just the attitude of (most of) the players.

We saw it in the Grand Final against Wigan as well, remember.

Only then it was Potter's fault and now it's the players' attitude

You have a poor memory. The only thing I blamed on Potter for the Grand Final was his choice of personnel, in particular using Lomax at centre when he hadn't played there before (and was straight back from three weeks injured). Other than that, my blame was all with the players. They didn't turn up then, they didn't turn up on Friday. I'm sure the scorelines were similar too. And we botched our chances in the second half as well then.

But we did finish top2, beat Hudds 3 times, Wire 3 times and Wigan once and reached the GF without Pryce and Eastmond.

Remains to be seen if Royce can achieve similar, I've certainly got my fingers crossed though.

I think it helped that we had Cunningham, to be honest. We have missed his presence this season, especially of late. He wasn't always the best performer in his twilight years but he only needed to walk on to the pitch and the side would settle. We don't have anyone who has that impact now and we have desparately needed it over the last two weeks.

I'm just waiting for us to have a full complement of forwards who are working together with backs who are working together and halves who can link between the two. Just that would be nice! But with all the disruption we have had - and now we are missing Scott Moore whose aggression we very much need just now - it's a wonder we are still clinging on to fourth spot. Kudos to Simmons for that.

Roby's done more this season so far than Cunningham did in his last two. If he's needed as a steadying presence why doesn't he speak up, he's still sat on the bench.
