For 2011 each club must have:
At least 8 home grown players.
No more than 5 quota players.
No more than 5 overseas trained players inc quota players.
Rest of squad to be from players trained within same federation*.
Home grown players - any player still under 21 and/or has completed 3 years service with the clubs academy set up.
Same federation - any player still under 21 and/or has completed 3 years service with other clubs academy set ups within UK (for UK SL clubs) or France (for Catalans etc)
Overseas quota players - as per current rules i.e. Anyone unable to prove origins within EU or Kolpak countries.
Overseas trained - any other overseas player (EU passport or Kolpak etc.)
*Overseas players who’s contracts were signed prior to these rules coming into place will count as federation trained as long as they remain at the same club. This amendment was brought in after the threat of legal action from Bull’s player Simon Finnigan.
The whole concept is based on where a player completed his training rather than nationality (which is against EU law), therefore for example Harrison Hansen is Home grown for Wigan as he completed 3 years at Wigan before the age of 21 and would be federation trained if he went to any other super league club, Thomas Leuluai is federation trained for Wigan or any other Super League club if he left and home grown for Quins if he ever went back.
