Can you help? : Mon Mar 21, 2011 11:47 am
Unusual one this but I am hoping one of you out there can help me.For some years now, I have adopted and cared for the wargrave of Pilot Officer Norman Sutton, a pilot in 72 squadron who died in the Battle of Britain on the 5th October 1940. He is buried in St Helens Cemetery, not far from Eric Ashton's grave.
In the pieces I have researched so far about his short and tragic life, I have uncovered the fact that he played rugby.
The question is for who? He lived in the St Helens area and was 26 when he died. I have spoken to your club historian and he has said that he didnt play for St Helens. I have written to the Liverpool St Helens rugby union club but there are so many amateur teams in the St Helens area I was just wondering if those of you that are members of said amateur clubs, who were going back in that era, if you could ask and make enquiries for me.
I am making the presumption that he played sometime from 1930 onwards. Any help you can give me would be very much appreciated.
Thank you
