Got back from Catalans - thoughts from the match : Mon Mar 07, 2011 12:38 pm
Just thought I would post a few thoughts from the Catalans weekend. Firstly I will say what a great weekend it is to go and watch the Saints down in Perpignan and I would recommend it to anyone – one of those things you have to do at least once!!! Yet again, we had a brilliant time and the weather was great which is also a bonus!1) Ok – the match itself. We didn’t play too well – again – but we got the victory. Catalans have really picked up their form and as the weather gets warmer, it will be a very tough place to go and get a result. We have taken 2 points from the match, so however disjointed the performance was, we won! Also, it’s worth remembering that Pryce went off very early in the match which disrupted the team and Moore also went off injured early in the 2nd half.
2) The new stand they are building will be a great facility when finished – it looks superb. I just hope they can continue to pick up their form to get the numbers in to watch the matches.
3) The behaviour of some of our fans was embarrassing and really let the rest of the fans down. 2 people got kicked out – I’m not going to say anything other than why did they just not sit down when they were asked?! The worst of the embarrassment came from a group of ‘supporters’ who were barracking Gardner and, most noticeably, Eastmond. I think Gardner has played well this season – he takes the ball in well and is usually pretty safe under the bomb. He may not be the quickest winger in the league but he does work hard. The abuse for Eastmond was disgusting. He has made his decision now and that’s it – we have to get on with it. I posted on here last week saying he should be dropped, but in hindsight it was a kneejerk reaction to show my disappointment. I have now had chance to think, and we have to get behind him for the rest of this season.
The ‘Swing Low’ chants, which Saints fans have done for a while now when kicking a penalty, were chanted when Kyle was lining up goal kicks. I thought this was unfair. The worst was when Kyle was lining up a goal kick right in front of where the majority of Saints fans were sat. Certain ‘fans’ were shouting at him to “Fook off to union’ and then booed him as he took the kick – similar to what a lot of fans do to opposition kickers – and then cheered when he missed!!! What is the point of travelling all that way to behave like that. I just don’t get it.
Anyway, overall it was a great weekend and I will hopefully get there next year – will try and persuade the wife to come next year too but she’s not into the rugby yet!
COME ON YOU SAINTS!
