Home grown players : Thu Oct 14, 2010 12:28 pm
"FIGURES revealed this week show that Saints are the undisputed kings of giving homegrown talent a break into Super League.

For the fourth year in a row Saints have topped the list with an average of 11.76 club trained players out of the matchday 17.

That figure is ahead of Leeds on 9.56, with neighbours Wigan and Warrington trailing way behind on 7.76 and 6.6 respectively. "

Am sure Rogues will have something to say about this......

SO the 4 teams with the most home grown players, are the top 4 teams in the comp.

Yet hull kr have just signed their 34th aussie for next season.

Some teams need to learn signing overseas players isnt the answer

That's one factor. We've also been sparing in our recruitment over the last couple of years (1 player per season coming in). I would suspect if we weren't having all the messing with moving out, we'd have recruited a bit better.

We have a good recruitment policy, but its effects have been exaggerated by the above imo.

I don't think it would have been far off, our major injuries have been to English players. Gidley, Meli, Flannery haven't missed a great deal. Do we count Fa'asavalau as English?

But as the report states, we have topped the table for 4 years. That is a long enough period for injuries to even out, and shouldn't detract from Saints policy of producing their own youngsters

I wouldnt doubt the policy as its clearly visible.
My original point was that this season it was so high due to your injuries would you not agree? Soliola, Gardner, Fa'asavalau, Pryce, Fozzard have all had long spells out whou would have kept some of the Emmitts of the world out? admittedly Eastmond would have played more! But think its been agreed hes made of Biscuit and a career in Yawnion is better suited to his body
Do we know what your average was for the previous 3 years?

Dropkick Murphy..we actually saw and heard a mass of bouncing and scarf and flag waving to Dale Cavese that drowned out anything we could muster.. It stopped us singing our own celebratory songs, it died out seconds later when we accepted we couldn't be heard over the Wigan lot
Celebrations muted from us, job done from them. Most fans who slag them off are jealous their own club's support is nowhere near that good
-
sally cinnamon..Why not discuss Wigan? It's a rugby league message board. Wigan are the most famous brand in rugby league
-
Tre Cool..Saints fans are hopeless unless it's a cup final or grand final. Wigan fans are so much more loyal and passionate
-
the flying biscuit..Wires havent been massively succesful over the years, but I've spoke to Brian Bevan And he spoke to me and i wouldnt swap that for Wigans History, ever
-
Ande..on the TV i could only hear the Wigan fans with about 10 to go
-
Saint94..Every team is in your feckin shadow, we all know

Well done to Saints for throwing the young players in but the only reason it is so many is because of the injuries.

I am glad Wigan have followed Saints and Leeds down this route though.

Most of our English players are homegrown though. Isn't it two years (or is it three) before 21?

Gardner and Wilkin must be close. That gives us Hargreaves, Fozzard and Pryce who aren't homegrown.

The injuries are a factor in that most got a chance, but by the end of the season Foster and Lomax were keeping Gardner out and Clough and Emmit were preferred to Fozzard.
