If Saints make the Grand Final this year they should invite Lee Briers to come and do a talk to the players on the winning mentality, there's a man that knows what it takes to face sides like Leeds in a major final and come out on top.

Saints have got the ability and potential there's no doubt about that, what they need is a few words from an inspirational figure like Briers who is from their own town and has got winners medals, it will make those lads in the Saints jersey think if he can go out there and do it then what's stopping me, maybe one day I can achieve the things in the game that he has.

:D Very witty, I'll give you that.

Saints have plenty to fear. We've not got it in us to beat Warrington and then beat Wigan or Leeds IMO. We might just about have enough talent to do it (I doubt it) but we don't have enough team spirit to pull it off. We don't have a leader, a captain, that can inspire them and we don't have the individuals that often win Grand Finals, such as Rob Burrow or Sam Tomkins.

As the guy above said, we're not going to get over this psychological barrier by just repeating final appearances. There needs to be a gap year or two. Last year proved it's in their heads, as once Leeds scored the first try in their comeback, the heads went down and it was over. That would happen as soon as the opposition went ahead this year, and there is no one in the squad to pull them through that.

can we have a bye then please and go and get beat for you

Yes - Briers is certainly the perfect model of professionalism and all Saints' players would do well to to learn from the perfect way he conducts himself.

This is a good point too. Not many players can prolong their career at the top well into their 30s like Briers is doing, it takes a model professional that has prepared himself well and looked after his body and Briers can give some tips to upcoming players on how to look after themselves so they can have as long a career in the game as he has.

I thought it might look arrogant to put it up just yet but if we beat the Saints and have the pies in the final I will put it on then because we all know they will cack themselves when they see the primrose and blue jerseys.

Yes - model sporting professionals who like to look after themselves and get themselves into the peak of condition and fitness by scarfing a few pints just a couple of hours before taking to the field in vital cup games are just the kind of inspiration that our young players need to look up to. I bet he taught Scott Moore everything he knows...

And besides, Briers only qualifies as a top player now because the standard of the competition and players in it has collapsed down to his level over the last few years. He could only teach the younger generation how to be the very definition of average and win nothing at a nothing club for the vast majority of their careers, and give tips on how best to keep warm while living in the icy shadow of actual top players like Martyn, Long, Goulding, Pryce, Sculthorpe etc.

Whilst ignoring everything that the silly Wire supporter has said on the previous posts this is a very good point

Briers , and the whole Wire team to a certain extent, has risen to the top by remaining resolutely average as the rest of the league continues to get worse each year

Maybe that's why once the competition starts proper they usually start to fall apart

Its a bit like how Saints started winning trophies when Super League started, it was just because the great Wigan side of old became average.

Sure Saints had a good run of success but Millward's entertainers would never have won anything if Wigan had Hanley, Edwards, Bell, Offiah and all the greats.

Of course the era when your big rivals were Bradford with world class talent like Michael Withers, Scott Naylor, Nathan McAvoy was when talent was at its peak!

Have you noticed, you can never find a radical priest when you need one.

No let’s be honest it wouldn’t be arrogance it would be the fact that it’s a lie now, and that aspirations don’t count, so I would wait if I was you. As for those jerseys starting involuntary bowel movements in the Wigan team, well I think they like your GF hopes will turn out to be no more than just a mirage.

Good idea in practice but I'm not sure our players are fluent in hobo.
