No. Rather it is because I have a very good degree from a Russell Group university in the subject and as a result of that not only can I translate what McManus was communicating in his interview, I also know that as you clearly cannot do so then I do actually understand the use of our language better than you do.

But you are making assumptions. You are translating it to suit your agenda. How do you know that what you have translated is correct or how McManus intended? The answer is you don't know, but such is your pompous self-righteousness that you just assume you are correct.

You don't understand our language any better than I do at all. You just can't get your head around the fact that your opinion isn't always factually correct.

In the interview he quite clearly says WE and OUR, when talking about being rational.

There is no direct or indirect linking this to the fans.


You can't say it was aimed at the fans, when he says WE do have great fans, (we the fans have great fans, yep that makes total sense in English).

Also we need to keep OUR nerve, keeping rational getting into and staying in that top 8 ( we the fans need to keep our nerve, stay rational and get into the top 8, yep another great piece of logic there, fans getting into the top 8, I know Wigan are numpties and give their fans a squad number, but actually fans will not get you in the top 8. )

The WE and OUR is McManus talking about the club as a whole, nothing aimed at the fans in the slightest.

You are totally putting your own spin on this.

There is nothing more arrogant than a self professed expert taking what is quite plain language and then spouting that this is what was meant by what was said.

It's very clear what he said and quite clear what he meant. Anyone with ears can hear it.

I'm afraid you are incorrect. He even stated quite clearly that he saw it as his job to get the fans behind the team (and that was a quote) as well as to "bring some rationality to this situation".

Whenever he was saying something that could be perceived as controversial he positioned himself as a fan. Whenever he said something clearly positive he talked about 'the fans'. However, he did also use the euphemism 'passionate' to describe the fans. That term generally doesn't have a positive connotation and was a little risky given that he clearly wanted to convey a message without directly insulting the very people on whom his business relies, ie the fans.

I'm not going to pull your post apart because that would be cruel and inappropriate on this forum. I will just say though that there is more to understanding the use of language than spelling, grammar and semantics. Using the inclusive 'we' is a very powerful tool, particularly when trying to communicate a difficult message to people you don't want to alienate.

It can be used as a euphemism for abusive. But I wouldn't expect you to know that. Your ignorance is splattered all over this thread.

I don't need to defend myself when it comes to understanding the use of the English language, and I have pointed it out plenty of times. That you cannot understand how or where is not my problem.

I also have a degree which I worked for later in life whilst holding down a job and feeding my family. Eamon has a degree from Cambridge, however unlike yourself he is not using it to play one-upmanship. Please tell me where you teach if it is in St Helens I really need my daughter to avoid you.

If you have a degree then you will also know that it is a sign of a lost argument when someone resorts to personal insults. It's also against the AUP fwiw.

Incidentally, I'm hardly playing one-upmanship. I'm simply providing evidence of my qualification to speak on the matter of language usage. Others say they play rugby league and/or coach it for the same reason when discussing rugby league. However, they aren't playing one-upmanship when they do that are they? No, of course not. Just me!

As for your attempt at wit and humour, this is a rugby league forum. As is evidenced by many posts on here, there isn't much call for an analysis of language use or even accurate language use. So I don't bother generally, unless people want to debate the issue which on here they clearly did. So I responded.
