Re: Storm Damage : Tue Jan 03, 2012 8:05 pm
gusts of upto 70mph are common place in the UK, all over the UK. It's a sustained speed that constitutes the actual wind speed and is what building's structual integrity is based upon.

Ok, so if there were 70mph gusts reported AT Langtree, and the roof seriously broke up, what would happen with an actual 70mph wind speed (also quite common in the UK now)... For a slight lift at 70mph, you could shrug and say "it's a 70mph gust", but not that amount of damage.

There IS a fault somewhere, there's Saints Fans all over here agreeing that there's a fault, everyone seems to be of the same opinion with exception yourself.

Look, Simon, I know you like to have a go but on this occasion I am repeating what has been stated. The figure of 70mph was again confirmed - by reference to meteoralogical data - on the local BBC news tonight. So don't bother arguing with me. Go contact the relevant authorities instead.

read my post again.
Even if it did gust to 70 mph, thats not a freak event, quite a normal winter storm. no other buildings were damaged and certainly none that were designed to hold 18000 people. If that happened during a game and the roof section landed in the crowd it would be a disaster and corperate manslaughter charges would follow

I did. With my lights on (including fog lamps) so that I could be seen. I was reminded of 2009 when we had the same kind of weather and I had to do exactly the same thing only I was somewhere near Wigan at the time which made the experience extra scary.

Fog lamps in the rain NO NO NO NO....they just dazzle other road users....called FOG lamps for a reason ya know

Fog Lamps can be used where visibility is less than 100m in front.

Rule 226

You MUST use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet). You may also use front or rear fog lights but you MUST switch them off when visibility improves (see Rule 236).

Rule 236

You MUST NOT use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226) as they dazzle other road users and can obscure your brake lights. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves.

for further info see the following link http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTr ... /DG_069859

but someone really needs to read the highway code again :SUBMISSION:

You really took the time to find and quote all that

Still dazzle other road users in the rain though

That's the bit you originally argued with and I subsequently advised you was confirmed by evidence on the news this evening. I don't disagree with what you are saying about the enormity of the problem. I was simply confirming that I had repeated information provided by those who measure the wind speeds; information you were questioning earlier.

At present the situation is very serious IMO. I cannot envison us being granted a health & safety certificate prior to the season starting. Had this second damage not occurred then we could have all rested in our beds believing it was just teething problems the first time. But now it quite clearly isn't. This could be very serious for the club and for our participation in the new season.

I'm just keeping everything crossed that it is either (a) shoddy workmanship or (b) an underestimation of the degree of fastening required for the roof cladding. If this is a structural or design problem then we are fooked.

The brand spanking new grandstand at Epsom Downs racecourse was.

Houses and shops up and down the country had roofs damaged and chimney stacks collapsed. Walls were even blown over. Take a look at some of the pics on the BBC website. Lots of properties were damaged throughout the UK today.

Local stadia are in very sheltered environments. Ours is very exposed on the south side. Maybe that wasn't considered to the degree that it should have been during the design or build phase? Who knows.

You didn't say in the vicinity for goodness sake! 70mph wind gusts can cause structural damage. That is a fact. Some properties elsewhere in the country were damaged as a result of lower windspeed gusts than 70mph. But I'm quite sure there are underlying problems at Langtree Park that need to be resolved in order that the stadium can cope with greater gusts of wind than it can at present.

I wouldn't class the stadium area as being sheltered and would think the wind is stronger down the link road. PC World also lost part of it's roof in recent years in much the same way.
