Can I just point out that this is one of the biggest distortions of truth that have appeared on this forum in the past two years. Puletua was comfortably our second best yardage making forward that year and was 8th overall in the league in metres made. Only Graham, Peacock and Lynch made more yards as a forward that season. I believe the fallacy first arose from posts by less observant fans on Saints forums, including this one. He had a good year for us this year but in 2009 he made more yards, more breaks, more tackle busts, scored more tries and made more tackles. Again, you obviously don't know what you're talking about.

So he is obviously going backwards then?

That's a big drop off in performance.

He actually was going backwards for a couple of games (which gives him those deceptive metres gained/lost stats during 2010) however next season with a new coach & added confidence (& instruction to go in the right direction) he will do ok.

I wouldn't say so.
Watching Tony play, I'd say the general concesus was that his 2010 performances matched the level of 2009. In fact, I would say his importance to our team has actually increased.

Lets look at the evidence-
I would say in 2010 he was used almost exclusively as a prop in the middle of the park, whereas in 2009 the coach pushed him out wide as a back row a bigger chunk of the time.

He made more yards (and a higher yard per carry) in 2009. Looking further, its safe to say that these extra yards will have come from the 11 extra clean breaks and extra tackle busts he made. Logically, you would think that a player like TP would make more breaks and busts the further away from the ruck that he was. The higher number of tackles may also suggest he was getting a little bit more game time.

That's my interpertation of the figures, anyhooos.

Lies, damned lies and statistics.

Stuart Raper who I rate as your best coach in the Super League era once said this...

"Statistics are like miniskirts... They show you a lot but they hide the best bits"

Tony provides a lot of creativity on the field which you cannot really summarise into statistics.

To be fair, one of the casualties was Jason Cayless!

You'll like this one, though
Their attacking brilliance is still there, as evidenced by 4.1 tries scored per game, third highest in the competition.

and they've apparently improvde defensively of late as well.

I'm excited about the new season and a fresh start. I've said on occasion over the recent seasons that there's little that give me more satisfaction as a supporter than seeing our youngsters turn into first team players, so one of my big hopes is that we can keep Lomax, Eastmond and Wheeler on the field for the majority of the season.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how our young backrow trio progress this year, as well.
