More important was his comment after the game: "It wouldn't have mattered if we came back after half time and won the game. It would not have addressed the issue that we face as a club" To what does he refer to there? Is he talking attitude and commitment by any chance?
you're not wrong, hes the man soley responible for that, if he cant do it, walk away!
On paper, we have the best squad in SuperLeague. I appreciate we've had some injuries, but Brown should be doing far, far better than this. Our opening to the season saw us where we should be - steamrollering other sides. But despite having a whole season to test different combinations, he still dicks about with positions and tactics.
Eamonn and his chums have invested first in the stadium/infrastructure and now in the playing squad. They deserve a much better return than this.
A truly great coach would have this team walking SuperLeague this season.
Best squad in SL? A truly great coach would have Saints walking SL?
Honestly, part of the problem Saints have is that the players believe this hype. Even if it were true - which it isn't, both Wigan and Leeds /have better squads - that you had the best squad, they would still have to put in the hard yards and play with passion.
I'd simply ask the players if they give a toss, if they don't theres the door.
Its quite simply some of the players arent of the desired standard but i'm sorry theres no excuse for not giving it all every week, there isn't one bit of fight or pride in that squad and looking back not one of them currently deserves to wear the shirt let alone carry the badge. There's not one bit of aggression between the lot of them on the field and sometimes you need a nasty person to just give the side a lift, unfortunately we lack that.
Someone needs to stick their neck out and be a leader, it's quite clear that nobody is willing to do so. Could imagine the rollocking Sculthorpe even Graham would have given them behind the sticks today after conceding those disgraceful tries.
Brown can't coach motivation into them but he could at least exude it for our sakes and get a little sodding angry once in a while.
Disheartened, underwhelmed, disappointed and frustrated is what im feeling now.
Lets just say i'd put good money on a fully fit 2014 Shaun Wane led Wigan team beating a fully fit 2010 Maguire led Wigan Team, despite the 2010 Team having a lot more individuals technically superior to those playing now.
not sure I'd agree with that, the 2010 side was a truly great side. Let's reserve judgement until the end of the year. The will to win of the current side is unbelievable though, there's almost a desperation to avoid being beaten that reminds me of Edwards in his pomp.
Getting back to Saints, they should follow the Maguire/Wane approach. Get Wellens - a man that understands the ethos of Saints just like Wane understands Wigan - to hang up his boots and be the assistant to a bright young Aussie coach with some new ideas to freshen things up. That's what you should do, Fingers crossed McManus does something else!
More like avoiding responsibility for his own mistakes.
I'll be fair, conditioning, structure, fitness, desire, and intensity are the responsibilities of all the coaching staff, with brown merely being the head. I've long said our application of sports science and the conditioning of our players has been steadily declining since Apollo left. We've tried removing the head several times, and the same problems crop up over and over. We all bang on about us having better players than this team and that team - and I still believe we have one of the best group of players in the league - what let's us down is our conditioning and fitness and aggression. If we could have a team frothing at the mouth every time they took to the field, and the fitness to play at that level on and on, we could take anyone comfortably (imo) - but without a complete overhaul of the coaching team, improve our conditioning 10 fold, and get structures in place, a coach able to get the team frothing at the mouth won't make a difference.
Not just him tho mate, I could list 80% of this squad that's not good enough. People got carried away with the early wins but let's be honest we've played well prob 3 times all year.
I hope people will now see what me and few orhers have been saying. We are port poor team.
After a few hours of reflection, I still feel as frustrated as I did after the first 15mins of the game. Wigan showed last night how you turn up and compete with a "bigger and better" team and simply out muscled and out enthused a more experienced Leeds side.
As has been said on here, watching saints through the early 90's, you would have seen a part time Saints team get demolished by a full time wigan side time and time again, but you couldnt imagine the likes of Roy Haggerty, Paul Forber, Bernard Dwyer, Paul Bishop, Shane Cooper putting in a completely inept performance as we have seen today. They may be outclassed, or outplayed due to the differing fitness levels, but they would never have shown such a woeful lack or heart or commitment. What they lacked in a level playing field, they more than made up with their attitude and a desire to "give it a go", which is what we saw from the Wigan kids last night.
As much as I dislike McIlorum, when was the last time you saw any of our players stand up to Jamie Peacock and take him off his game? Answer......never. Where is Sonny Nickle when you need him. Im all for respecting the opposition, but there is a big difference between respecting them and being in awe of them and quite simply, our forward pack is second best to Leeds, Wigan, Warrington and Huddersfield. From what Ive seen over the weekend, Id say Cas also had a better pack. When push comes to shove, we will be lucky to finish in the top four this season and after such a good start, that makes it all the more frustrating.
There is no short term fix for our problems, sacking brown will mean Rush appointed again and we will revert back to the team running the team, rather than one man in charge. The old boys club at saints has a lot to answer for and has been responsible for our issues over the last 5 years, particularly the performances that got Potter and Simmons sacked. We now seem to be doing the same in order to force the Chairman to do the same to Brown, rightly or wrongly, this is like Turkeys voting for Xmas. My question would be, what do the players actually want in a coach? It seems no one is good enough and it doesnt take long for the senior players to lose faith, as a result, they lose the dressing room and then the team capitulates. We have seen it time and time again. Unless as a club we invest in a coach that doesnt take any poop, and the chairman backs him and his decisions 100%, we will be forever in this downward spiral.
Its clear Brown cant motivate the team, nether could potter, neither could simmons, yet we keep appointing the same "type" of coach and then complaining that we arent getting the best out of the team......why??
Finally, as everyone knows we are desperate....thats DESPERATE for a 6. There must be someone knocking about in the Championship that can do a better job than HiHo and take some of the pressure off Walsh. I wouldnt be surprised if he does leave at the end of the season, why would you continue to get battered week after week when you are surrounded by such woeful and enthusiastic-less players?
I remember Wigan demolishing Saints (apart from the 92 side you had with Kevin Ward in it, which was a great side and came very close to a league title) but not us all being full time and Saints being a team of part timers only. Wigan went full time in 92 i think, by which time most of your players were full time. No one made a fuss about it at the time, other than Ian Lucas having to stop working in an antique shop there wasn't much press interest. Leeds went full time around the same time (not that it helped them much).
You're right though about the fact that the likes of Cooper, Bishop, Dwyer, Nickle etc would have given it 100%. No one would ever have questioned their commitment.
That interview with Wellens at the end is damning. That's a pro thats been there and won it all and he shouldn't have to come out and say that, the anger in is voice is quite incredible really.
