In the Smith incident I was more disappointed in Sam Tomkins. If he hadn't been too busy arguing with Ben Flower and had been watching what was happening he could have easily have atleast diffused the ball and it would have been a drop out. Smith clearly takes his time knowing he was offside and looking at Sam, But he wasn't really left with any option. Professional Foul? Yeh, but don't think it was a penalty try as the ball wasn't in the in goal area.

A lot seemed to be Ignored by Silverwood. LMS could have been binned twice for starters.

The Meli and Tomkins incident wasn't a penalty either way. Watched the reply and they both just run into each other not even looking at the ball.

The ball doesnt have to be in the in goal area for a pentalty try,the question is IF Smith had not of kicked the ball out would a try most likely of been scored.If you take Smith out of that scenario then yes it most likely would of as Tompkins was still busy arguing and Sia was bearing down on the ball.It was certainly a case for a yellow card at the very least,but both sides should of had players binned yesterday.

Definition

Awarded to the attacking team if a player has been fouled in the act of scoring a try. The kicker then has the opportunity to kick the ball between the posts from the point at which the incident took place.

The only time I can recall a penalty try was for Tomkins when Raynor smashed him in the face whilst he was in the process of grounding the ball against Bradford in 2011. I think he knocked on as he was diving over the line because he was knocked out cold by a bad high shot. In that case there was no doubt he was scoring had it not been for the foul. he physically had the ball and was putting it down.

In this case, The attacking team, technically, was Wigan. Professional Foul yes, but still don't see how a penalty try would have been warranted,Saint's didn't physically have possession and no one was technically in the act of scoring a try, because no one had the ball. Of course Eddie and Stevo started crying that it could have been, but we all know they don't have a clue. There has to be no doubt that a try would have been scored to give one. you've said yourself it's "most likely" but still not 100% is it? what's to say Soliola wasn't going to knock on or be tackled by flower or Sam and Held up, too many variables for me.

Wasn't Goulding denied a penalty try last good friday when Shenton blatantly took him out off the ball? He got sin binned I think but Pretty sure the explanation was that because goulding didn't physically have possession there was doubt as to whether he would have touched down or not,, therefore it couldn't be given.

The rareness of pentalty trys makes people unsure about them,ive seen the them given when people have kicked ahead and been taken out,you don't need to have possetion of the ball and the ball doesn't need to be in the in goal area.

Its something people will never agree on and I can see both sides of the argument,personally I think Sia would of scored if Smith hadn't of touched the ball.

the funny thing is tomkins still scored the try. check it on the tube. i vaguely remember an international last year where thruston cracked someone in the face resulting in a penalty try to england because of the resulting knock on. may be making it up...

Tomkins indeed did get the ball down. I remember it well because her who knows nowt was telling all and sundry that he couldn't have been knocked out because he didn't drop the ball.

Was the Tomkins incident vs Bulls in the cup a penalty try or an 8 pointer (try and 2 kicks at goal)?? Believe yesterdays would of been a standard penalty try if awarded i.e 6 points as the incident prevented the try being scored not while it was being scored. Think it was in an NRL game last year or year before Sam Burgess gave away an 8 pointer as he slid in with his knees on the attacker as the try was being scored.

I think it's good that this has created a debate, and it shows that the incident was not clearly one way or another. It didn't really have an impact on the end result, so I think that helps when it comes to these sort of discussions.

I was disappointed at the match that Smith wasn't sin-binned as it was so obvious and blatant. Otherwise he would have just picked it up.

Maybe the fact that Silverwood (ridiculously) gave a drop-out initially prevented any chance of him showing a yellow card?
