Re: 2012 - What would you do? : Mon Apr 04, 2011 12:37 pm
In the end it's the balance, we have a limited spend under the salary cap so it's more about what the club can afford to pay. We could offer Graham a million but that would leave little else for the rest of the squad. Ok and extreme example, but if you offer so much to Flannery or Gardner, that leaves less for Puletua and Graham. So it's not about getting rid off Flannery who has played well this year, (funny that playing for his contract)?
It's about well can we get 90% of that from Dixon at 40 - 50% of the cost, then put the savings in elsewhere (Graham, Puletua, another halfback, centre)
Prop wise I would say we are pretty well stocked.
LMS, Perry, Puletua, Graham, Clough.
5 good to decent props is about as much as you can expect in the days of squad limits and salary caps, any more and you would end up with lower quality or less money for the backs.
I think 2nd rowers and wingers are where you save your money as a team. This is the area where you can spend a bit less to get a bit more in other areas In the end for me
1, 6, 7, 9, 13 are where most of your money goes, then 3 ,4, 8, 10.
It's very difficult to justify big spending on the rest of your squad. £1.6 million does not go far. That's £64,000 per player in a 25 man squad. And you can bet that Pryce, Graham, Puletua, Eastmond are all pulling down more than £64k.
