I think there are a few possible factors to this:

1 - Brown's opinion on Wellens. Brown doesn't have the sentimentality people at the club do, so if he has had discussions with Eamon about the squad for next year, which we have no evidence to know either way, he might say he doesn't want him. Converserly he might say he's got so much work in other areas that he doesn't mind a 1 year extension.

2 - Eamon's opinion. We can all see that McManus sees this differently from most people and that his 'rugby' knowledge is very poor. His judgements on coaches has been poor and his squad development, if it is him behind it, is too. He claimed this current squad was good enough to win trophies, when in reality it's not capable of challenging the top 4. He might see Wellens as a good player There are still people on redvee claiming he's the second best fullback in SL after all.

3 - Contract exemptions. Wello's contract is currently partially exempt from the cap is it not? Are there any changes which could affect this? Perhaps by someone like Roby now being eligible for the exemption that previously only Wello qualified for?

One player who has been registered with the club for 10 years is eligible for a 50% reduction towards cap.

Jon Wilkin and Ade Gardner qualify under these conditions.

Edit: That's up to a maximum of £50,000. It can be spread amongst eligible players or used on one player if they earn £100k+.

He won't have the same sentimentality, in fact, what he'll have is a very objective veiw of him since he's coached teams against us.

If Brown has identified Wellens weaknesses and targeted them with success for Huddersfield, then he'll be apprehensive about holding on to him. If, on the other hand, he's planned to attack him and been thwarted, his opinion may differ?

I can't see, with the way Brown's teams like to handle and the way modern teams use the full back, combined with Wello's age and, one would assume, reasonably substantial wage demands, that he'll be keeping Wello on next year.

If Salford need to replace Pattern, they may well be in for someone of Wellens experience.

Who is suggesting we're doing that? If as rumoured we're offering Gaskell round I'd be very disappointed and would have that decision has come from Brown rather than Eamon/Rush.

Smith in to replace him would be a very strange move. I like him as a player, but he's clearly not going to make us compete for titles again.

Brown has 100% had a meeting with McManus about the squad and player recruitment.

Yep and I believe the outcome of that meeting was mainly he wants to change the halves.

From what I'm told the words he used " stand off is priority, forget props or backrows we need a stand off and that's the bottom line"
