Always difficult to judge when you're using so many interchanges, but it was good to back at LP first and foremost. Lot of mistakes made by both sides as you would expect in those conditions, but it was a decent run out in perpetration for what's to come. I thought Batley did themselves proud as well.
Defensively we looked good as the result suggests, and I can't remember too many occasions where Batley really looked like threatening our line. It was always going to be a one out game given the conditions, but when we did move the ball wide I thought we looked threatening. Makinson had one chalked off on the end of a decent move and scored towards half-time. I thought Flanagan had a decent game on his return and Percival looked threatening. No doubt he will push Josh Jones for that centre spot. Looks like he has put some fair weight on as well, but he looked sharp.
Bit of a word on Gary Wheeler as well. Everything about him says natural stand-off in my opinion. He looked to be playing scrum-half when he came on with Lance at 6, but he's got that natural ability and rugby brain that marks him out in my opinion. I've been told that he has been training really well in pre-season, but I would love to see him really kick on this season if he can keep himself fit. To be fair though, I thought Lance did well when he came on. Great break for Flanagan's try and it's always good to have competition for places. As I said earlier, there was a lot of dropped ball up front but Amor did alright IMO. Made a few mistakes as you would expect in those conditions, but did well on the whole considering it was his first run out.
At the end of the day it was a solid performance and a win. Lots to work on though as you would expect.
