Maybe the likes of Makinson weren't around? Or maybe we're thinking he's got pace and perhaps he hasn't? I can't ever remember seeing him streak free from distance to be able to judge it.

It's not the fastest but the are some pretty quick lads these days. Foster, Ade, makinson, shenton, Gaskell, Ashe, lomax and robes ain't slow.

Clearly not - as evidenced by the fact that Meli was booted out of the NRL whilst Hohaia could still be playing there now if he so wished. What you are doing is taking minute snapshots of Hohaia making mistakes - in the toughest league in the world where errors are punished far more severely than in SL - and using them to ascribe some kind of fundamental deficiency in his game. Unfortunately, you fail to explain why such an obviously flawed player managed to not just consistently compete in the NRL (as Meli could not) but also excel in arguably the toughest contests in professional RL - Australia vs NZ.

He's no halfback and he certainly can't play with Lomax as they are both primarily runners with no kicking game.

Hohaia can kick as well as either Burrow or McGuire - two halves who are also primarily runners. How many SL titles have they won together, I can't quite remember?

His versatility got him that gig. He would never have played for NZ in any other position than hooker had he stayed in one position.

I was at Ade's forum last Tuesday and the question of pace came up. Makinson and Wheeler were also there with Ade and Lance. Ade himself said that Lance won the time trials. He is a pacey little bugger. And yes, he beat Makinson as well and we know how fast Makinson is because we've seen him at full pelt.

One of Hohaia's plays is a chip over and regather to score. I'm just dying to see him do that.

I can throw a peanut in the air and there's a good chance it will drop on a "versatile" player. You don't play thirty games for NZ with a one-in-three try-scoring record (especially now when they are swamped with quality) simply because you are versatile. The NRL cuts dozens of utility players from its roster each season so it's nonsense to suggest you can wear the NZ Warriors shirt - with a one-in-three try-scoring record - for the best part of 200 games solely for your utility.

Hohaia has been a top performer in the NRL for years. Yes, there were a few issues in his final season, but the NZ fans I know seem to think much of that was down to a) injury and b) uncertainty over contract negotiations.

So two running halves can play together. That's settled.

Could kicking not share between Lomax, Hohaia, Roby and Wilkin? I thought Robys kicking was rather impressive yesterday. But i'd prefer to play lance at fullback with him coming into the attack more often than Wellens did yesterday, almost like a third halfback.
