We can be bold enough to make a stand and do battle for our views and beliefs. But we must strive to be mature enough not to resort to unnecessary personal attacks upon people with opposing views.

That's veiwing the FB role being the old style of FB, that is quite common within SL. If you look to SOO then a FB can actually act as a 3rd halfback. If you like replacing the 3rd halfback option that used to be occupied at loose forward.

This means that you can have more bigger forwards and the FB has a more attacking role rather than just a supporting role. Tomkins does this well at Wigan, offering himself up as a kicking option and a runner at the line as well as a support player.

Not to mention at FB Leon would not have to undertake the defensive duties in the line. Besides surely the player makes the position their own, not the other way around.

No idea, why would Shenton play wing?

I was just mixing it up a little

Shenton will do fine. He just needs time to settle in. His game hasn't been aided by the inexperience of our halves. They've yet to work each other out before they can best find a way to bring Shenton into the game a bit more.

Firstly, I wasn't having a go (just asking you opinion) Must clarify that.

I can see you point about the role of the fullback as a pivot. Having watched Brett do it all year (arguably to the best effect in the league) I understand the concept.

However, as you mention Sam. Sam, according to the pies + Wigan coaching staff, is a better fullback than 6. Additionally Brett is an out and out Fullback and I don't remember seeing him as a half.

Pryce is a (rather) old and experienced half, and is better than the current options available to Saints in the hlaves, he is not a fullback.

Although he could maybe do a job at fullback (which is debatable); my question is, why would he?

I doubt he would relish the opportunity to play in a new(ish) position when he is (I think) one year away from possible retirement. This is magnified when we consider there are rumours of Cats and Bradford wanting him to do what he has done at Sts for them.

It would be worth a try with a young guy but not for Pryce. In fact, you know this as much as anyone. This is because the unsure but promising half back playing for saints this year is fullback in waiting, Lomax.

I think the Shenton on the wing idea has promise. He is getting nothing in terms of service where he is now. He almost appears to be a waste of money. Also, I am sure he has the class to migrate further out. He isn't a Meli type player who is big and better in the centres. However, the same can't be said of Pryce. As I have mentioned, Pryce would only be getting a small extension (I believe Shenton is on a longer contract; need to make the most of him) and is young and eager to learn.

I know what you are think. ' WHy is a Wire supporter banging on about age; hypocrite." Well I still think Pryce is one of the best at what he does. I think Briers, Brett and Pryce are all class. I don't think they should be moved about in horrible positions. I vaguely remember Lee Briers at fullback ... **shudders**

I see what you're saying but Pryce has played fullback before on numerous occasions and has done a very good job for us. His step and evasive work would go well when he can chime into the line wherever he wants, he would also be able to chip in with the passing game and give an option to kick.

Jonny is not and never has been a full back though, he has always played at half back and that is where his future lies for me. Tommy Makinson will be the next long term FB for Saints if he is still at the club.

Pryce's best role for Saints is that 2nd receiver half back, slightly wide, where he can choose to distribute, but also has more space. The extra pivot role that some full backs (hodgeson) play, is very similar to that role (although sometimes they're 3rd receiver) and Pryce would rip it up if he was getting the ball in positions that Wellens has run in this year (typically just inside Meli).
It would also suit his tendancy to want to pick and choose when he injects himself into the game rather than being at the hub of every set.

When he has been named at fullback, he's never looked too thrilled about taking thise kicks, though.

Do what we used to under Millward? He could attack at fullback, defend at stand off and train as a prop?

So Shenton and Soliola are both in the 19 for this weekend. Do we move Sia back to the pack or reshuffle the backs to accommodate him in the centres?

I'm pretty certain Sia will be back in the pack but I'd rather he stayed centre. As Wakefield in theory shouldn't pose too much of a threat and Wello obviously needs a rest I'd be tempted by something like this as our back 5:

28. Thomas Makinson
22. Jamie Foster
5. Francis Meli
4. Sia Soliola
3. Michael Shenton

1 - Mackinson
2 - Shenton
3 - Soliola
4 - Meli
5 - Foster

Unbeatable backline.

Unfortunately it will no doubt be

1 - Wel-----------l--------------e-------------n-------------s
2 - Mackinson
3 - Shenton
4 - Meli
5 - Foster
