For me this is more of an argument for letting him go. Come the off-season we will have an urgent need for a top quality three-quarter, and quite possibly a half-back and a prop as well. Given that we have a fair amount of depth in the back row (okay, they aren't all world-beaters, but they are capable), wouldn't it be wise to free up a quota spot and a chunk of cap space by releasing Flannery and reinvesting elsewhere in the squad?
