Smith's not even average. He will forever be remembered as the scrum half that couldn't exploit an overwhelming advantage in the forward pack against Australia - which only became bigger as the game drew on.
There are British scrum halves going back decades (good and less so) who would have given their eye teeth to be in such a position. Especially since they were the victims of a similar Australian advantage which has - apart from perhaps three games in thirty years - been constant.
Indeed, if I could write a definition of a mediocre scrum half I'd say "
Blowing a massive forward pack advantage in big games". I wouldn't mind - Smith's reputation has largely been built on a solid kicking game - which vanished quicker than a fox with the hounds at its heels in Aus.
Talk about infamy.
