I thought Percival had a very impressive debut. He was good with the ball but his defence really impressed me for a young lad on debut.

Didn't notice Wheeler until he limped off tbh.
As for Percival very encouraging in defence in the first half, the second half in attack I think helped by space created by us playing 2 hookers and losing a back rower in the middle, but still made the most of his opportunities. As for not kicking, perhaps Brown didn't want to place too much pressure on him on debut.

I was going to post about his defence. Had Ablett in his pocket.

no matter how many times you say Turner and Manu no one is going to agree with you because both have created tries tonight or been intrumental in tries tonight and picking out 2 players from a team that is not jelling, especially when they have only played 5 or so games for the Saints is pretty poor effort.

We can be bold enough to make a stand and do battle for our views and beliefs. But we must strive to be mature enough not to resort to unnecessary personal attacks upon people with opposing views.

Re: The 1 Sining Light, Percival : Fri Mar 01, 2013 11:08 pm
I do think some fans have agenda's that they run with, whether that is because they have an inside interest in other players doing well I don't know.

But often the same fans will boost Wheeler and dump on Gaskell, others will wait for any excuse to hit players from outside St Helens.

Personally I don't get it.

I thought it was a hard fought, defensively tactical game. We lacked the finesse and the kicking game of Leeds, but we where not blown of the park against a 5 times GF winning team and a team up to speed at the start of the year for the WCC. If we where bad, then Leeds must have been almost equally poor.

Percivals performance was the best by a centre in the redvee since Jamie Lyon was playing for us.

The big issue was that we blew a couple of trys down that flank because Meli just wasnt quick enough to keep up with him.

Would be tempted to pair Percival with Makinson against Wire, as it would at least give us some genuine pace down the flank. Not that i expect us to get much ball in that game. I think it could be somewhat of a blowout. Wires pack will demolish Saints.

I would also say that Percival was not the only shining light. Lomax was again outstanding at fullback.
A number of Percivals breaks were down to Lomax joining the line at pace.

Dont know why certain individuals are knocking JT and Manu. I thought Manu was one of our better players, and so far this season i have thought Turner has been solid in every game he has played. He is no world beater, but i never expected that. He is a good player who offers more than Shenton did to the team both in attack and defence.

Great performance from Percival. I agree with TCM about Lomax chiming in at the line. For me, what he needs to do is actually touch the ball less, take it in less and let Gardner (who was good again) and TMak/Meli take it in more.

Lets not go mental about him, well worth his shirt.

He is the first of a few good players that have looked good coming through the juniors. People have been talking about Savelio but I also thing Greg Richards will be making a splash in the first team before long.

Hopefully we will see a big clear out at the end of the season and we can start building for the future.

He looks a great prospect, very exciting and nothing phased him, looking forward to seeing more of him.

Manu I like. He's a quality player, but his game is being ruined by him playing too many minutes because we have no strength on the bench. He's a player who should be limited in game time in order to make more of an impact when he is on. The more minutes he plays, the lower the impact he'll have on the game will be.

I really don't agree with you on Turner. He cannot defend, our right flank is going to be a massive weakness with him at centre. I'd love to see some stats on where we concede breaks, his channel would be top of the list I'd bet. Going for, what exactly does he offer? I've seen him play five times in the V now and I'm already sick to death of the run up, hop, skip and fall over approach he has. Our backs should be told to carry the ball in like Ade Gardner does. Turner doesn't seem to have any of the natural ability to run dangerous lines that the better centres do, he is obviously a very good athlete, but I think that is his only attribute, he doesn't seem to have any natural talent for the game.

Percival looked terrific. He looked very pacy and could be deadly with a decent winger outside him, someone like Dixon from London or Broughton. Defensively he did fine, only showing his naivity once when he shot out of the line and tickled Ablett.
