Good luck to him tonight - we don't expect miracles , just run hard and make you're tackles and you'll do for me at prop.

If he even puts in a bit of effort, he's contributed more than Perry! He looked good in the friendlies, looking forward to same, and hopefully more.

Judging by tonights performance he is somewhat out of his depth.

He really struggled with the pace of the game, i was surprised Hull didnt target him at the ruck area, as it was like watching Fat Feka struggling to make the defensive line after a tackle was made.
The two knock ons he made were completely unforced and looked to me down to basic fatigue after only being on the pitch for 10 mins.

Personally think he needs at least a good 12 months of coaching to get upto the fitness demands of SL. Then his obvious size may start to pay dividends

Knock ons aside, I thought he did well, ran the ball in hard and made some good tackles. For a first game at this level I was happy with it, the dropped balls could have been nerves playing a part too.

Re: Walmsley : Fri Feb 15, 2013 10:48 pm
I think he did OK, took the ball up well and didn,t really make any missed tackles. He played for 17 mins in the first half which is already 7 mins more than Feka, we will probably have to give him more game time if injuries pile up. The more he gets match fit, the more he.s going to be a real handful.

I wouldn't say out of his depth. He looked very nervous when he came on and was having to be guided around by the senior players. But that is to be expected. In terms of getting back the 10 he reminded me a lot of Maurie Fa'asavalu when he first joined, he'd set off full of enthusiasm in completely the wrong direction, then make an awkward correction and end up a few feet out of position. His tackling seemed fine, he put in some good hard hits, which was probably why Hull didn't target him, he can tackle. With the ball he ran strongly and could be a decent player by this time next year.

He looks prone to knocks ons because of his height. As you mention it's fatigue, making him careless. It's up to the coaching staff to make him slow down and concentrate on getting a clean play the ball.

Very harsh critique - 'out of his depth' is far too critical.

The lad is what, 22 and has just come out of playing part time RL? Obviously he's not going to be fully up to it; that's obvious!

The lad came on and showed aggression and enthusiasm (more than what Perry has showed in 2/3 seasons). Yes he made a few unforced errors, but he'll learn from that.

I honestly didn't know what you expected? Chris Hill - a completely different situation?

The highlighted bit is why i think he is out of his depth. For me he has been thrown in too early. I would rather we played either Jordan Hand or Karl Foster in this match as they have at least been around the professional environment for longer, and would be under less pressure to perform, due to them not having been hyped up.

Walmsley needs a good 18 months of coaching. I'm reminded in many ways of Fa'asavalu. He was clueless and unfit when he came to Saints but after 2-3 years we had molded him into a top quality impact player.
I hope we can work on Walkmsley and make him something more than Maurie, but i fear we wont do that by throwing him to the lions each week.
