Is it too obvious to say because it is an area in the pitch which, by the nature of it being a scoring area, is different to the rest of the pitch.
The rule works. If Makinson can't stay up and not ground the ball, unlike all the other players in the league, then he's a bit poop.
I can just see it now. The new rule is introduced next season and Makinson slips again (even though he obviously intended to ground the ball last night), makes his silly hand signal while he's grounding the ball, leaves the ball on the floor and an opposing player runs up and puts his hand on it; TRY!
See it's so inconclusive. Ref's can miss it, hand signals are easily to mistake in a game played entirelly with hands and it's a daft idea; especially when the rule is fine as it is!
