In terms of defence I'd say Makinson is a fair way ahead. But then he does have a lot more experience.

Of defence or just in the first team? Makinson has yet to play a full season at first team level (and he hasn't been played every week this season either) so I would hardly say he has a 'lot more' experience.

Makinson is one of the few players I've seen turn Tomkins inside out. Do you think Swift could manage that? I've only seen Swift play once and so I have no idea what he has to offer.

Swift looks a great prospect. Reminded me of Gleeson when he first arrived from Huddsfield. Spindly, wirey kid but could step off both feet & has good pace & acceleration. Cant remember many breaks or tackle busts from Foster, think when he starts filling out we could have a very good SL player if he keeps working.
After all the recent doom & gloom:

1. Makinson
2. Swift
3. Turner
4. Jones
5.
6. Gaskell
7. Lomax

We have some exceptional talent all in their youth & hopefully will develop under Brown. Add a sprinkling of experience to the squad and we have the makings of a very competetive side. That backline looks alot quicker than in recent yrs although I accept by means the finished article & needs adding to and developing.

It's all well and good putting these teams up full of youth but it never turns out like that. We've had all sorts of teams posted on here and most don't even stay at the club.

I've said it 100s of times, you'll be lucky to get two good players coming thru ever 3yrs.

Thats why i said underneath "admittedly it needs adding to & developing" and will need some experience alongside them.
Making the point that there is pace in the squad and some good kids that Brown will add to, and not doom and gloom as some have suggested post Wigan.

It's a tough Job for brown due to poor recruitment and the retention of certain players. For example Meli, Gardner and wello need replacing in the backs when they should not been kept so he has the job of trying to find replacements r having to keep certain players.

Bacically he needs to replace wello, Meli, Gardner, flannery, shenton, Laffranchi, perry in the next two seasons and it's tough finding quality players these days due to salary cap and qouta rules.

IMO the club should have started to replace these players 2yrs ago instead of having to try and do it all at once.

TM hasn't played a lot of games. But he is far more experienced than Swift, who has yet to lock horns with any of SL's big players.

Makinson is one of the few players I've seen turn Tomkins inside out. Do you think Swift could manage that? I've only seen Swift play once and so I have no idea what he has to offer.

Whilst Makinson has come up with some pretty useful footwork he doesn't strike me as naturally gifted in that department (rather than being an innate skill I think it's something he works hard at). There's a noticeable awkwardness about his running style and his balance seems slightly out. This is not necessarily a problem. After all, Les Quirk was one of the most ungainly wingers you'll ever see and yet I'd take him over Gardner and Meli in a heartbeat.

To me Swift looks an athlete by birth. He's well balanced, has a low centre of gravity (giving him the ability to step off either foot at pace) and a slashing running style. There's a touch of ego to his game which emerged in that mesmerising in-goal catch and extrication during the Widnes game. Of course, he needs to fill out and until then we won't have a true idea about his best position. But as things stand he does have the makings of a damaging runner and given space to work in at fullback he could turn out to be very useful player.

Re: Adam Swift : Tue Jun 05, 2012 10:19 am
Not seen much of Swift, but the little I have seen has been pretty decent. He more or less carved that try out on his own yesterday by running at defenders.

However without seeing the rest of the game it is impossible to tell, whether later on Hull got his number.

But a +ve start is always to be welcomed. I think in terms of replacing players in the brown era, the wingers I think brown will be more than happy to fill from the clubs ranks of youngsters. However it will take alot longer for the club to build a huge prop and so you can see brown going shopping for this type of player. Same for a half, we have 3 saints halves already and if they are not what brown wants then he will probably look elsewhere rather than to yet another Saints youth half.

I'd imagine Swifts future at Saints is either on the wing or competing with the likes of Tommy at FB. But we can't discount that he may just be a squad player or playing a bit part before trying his luck elsewhere.

I agree that in the past 2 good players over 3 years would have been good, but it is more likely that we will need to try out about 10 players over those 3 years to get the 2 players who prove to last the distance. Also we should not expect all of those 10 to be GB players. Some players can be decent performers and make up squad numbers and still add value without being the next sean long.

How many decent Saints academy players have played for Saints during the ' Golden Era' without becoming permanent fixtures like Roby, Wellens, Cunningham??

I never get caught up in the hype of young players coming thru. It's laughable really to here - Sean Devine is next Alex murphy, Ste tyrer is the next Jamie Lyon, Dixon/ashurst are next joynt etc

The only player coming thru in last god knows how many years that I've got excited about was Kyle eastmond who IMO had the world at his feet if he had heart and didn't get to big for himself to early.

I said at the time when people was listing the future team which was basically 80% of homegrown players that most will be on the lower leagues or at Salford and I still stand by that.

Re: Adam Swift : Tue Jun 05, 2012 12:34 pm
Always thought Lomax would be a good footballer, agree most young kids get hyped up very early on, Percival the obvious example & he hasnt even featured at first team level. All depends on expectations, Ive watched Saints for 26 yrs but always thought the likes of Emmitt & Paul Johnson would do a job similar to Cloughie now.
Think Gaskell has all the skills to be a very good SL half, but Swift has things that cannot be coached. Unlike Foster he looks fearless, has pace, good acceleration great feet & can beat a defender which to me sets him apart from the ones gone before ie Hayes, Arnold, Stewart etc
