Wellens will probably get rolling one year deals from now on, remember Saints never offer alot once you pass 30, hence, Longy and Pryce leaving for longer deals elsewhere.

We still could do with a genuine #7 longer term, but Lomax can most certainly be devastatingly effective playing there for the next few years provided the rest of the team is organised around relieving him of the traditional SH stuff that just isn't in his game so that he can just get on with doing his off the cuff thing. I still worry about where our kicking game in the big matches is going to come from as the jury is still out on Lance's boot being able to reliably carry us yet I think.

Wellens plays well when his spot in the team is under threat. At the beginning of his career he was not first choice so tried very hard when given the chance. In 2006 Ian Hardman looked like he was going to take his spot so he started trying again. Now we have Makinson and Ashe in the team. When did Wellens start playing well? When Ashe was selected as the back on the bench.

It is a shame he does not try his best week in week out without the threat of him losing his place. If so he may have been as good a player as some of the people on here think he is.

Leave Lomax where he is and and the genuine #7 that you so desire will metamorphose.
