Yeh but that is the way of transfers these days. Cas got nowt for Shenton. Saints have also lost Emmitt, Smith, Johnson et al, all for nothing. Most clubs will wait till players are off contract, it makes sense.
There are the rare exceptions. In the end the home club have first dibs to sign a player, it's up to them whether to try and tie them to a long contract or not.
Anything else would be restriction of trade. I only have to give my employer a months notice. So at least the contracts require a full filling of the contract and players can't chop and change each week depending on the price, as that would kill sport as a support based event.
