The 2 are not mutually exclusive. If you score more than the opposition you will win games.I've never bought into the theory that defence wins games, as it's quite clearly bunkham and illogical. If you wanna test the theory. When you get the ball kick it back to the opposition every time and see who scores more. The side who defends more or the side who attacks more.
Defence stops you losing but it does not win you matches. Just as risk free play reduces the risk of losing but an element of risk makes you unpredictable and harder to stop. In the end if we play entertaining rugby and are fairly decent in defence we will win matches and so be in the mix to win stuff.
5 drives and a kick will only get you so far, as the last 4 grand finals have proven.
I'd rather watch entertaining rugby and think we could win something than watch 5 drives and a kick to just get to finals to lose to sides willing to give the ball some air.
