Success is not final; failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts. (Winston Churchill)

Re: Lomax and Gaskell : Sat Mar 26, 2011 12:07 am
For Gawd's sake, Saddened! Gaskell has now played in about nine - NINE! - first team games. Two of the first three he was played off the bench.

This was probably his most pressurised game so far because everyone - everyone - knew Saints HAD to win this match. They had to put a marker down at home for the fans, for the league and for themselves. Gaskell tackled hard, he made some great passes and he kicked a couple of beauties. He was everywhere and kept having a go. No-one tonight put in the kind of show they put in at Leeds. Why should we expect Gaskell to? He is very, very inexperienced and is trying his best.

While Lomax was good, I thought he took on the line less than he did at Leeds. His kicking was poor. But yes, he also made some great breaks and worked hard too.

We shouldn't be expecting these guys to perform as if they were experienced pros. They are not. But the experience they are getting is of great value and will stand them in good stead for the future. We won the match tonight and we did that in part because we had two halfbacks prepared to engage, take on the line and work hard. We also have a fullback who is a total star.

Yeah, sorry boss, when you put it like that I suppose I'm being a tad harsg. They are both wonderful prospects.

We can be bold enough to make a stand and do battle for our views and beliefs. But we must strive to be mature enough not to resort to unnecessary personal attacks upon people with opposing views.

Re: Lomax and Gaskell : Sat Mar 26, 2011 12:38 am
It's going to be a seasons of ups and downs for these 2. But then it is for every half back.

I remember watching Long and Martyn. It was actually quite rare for them both to have a good game at the same time. When they did the opposition where in for a bad night.

More often one would play very well the other average or poor.

Gaskell seams to be in charge of the kicking game and lomax the running game. The attention is often drawn to the runner as it's the more exciting part of the game. But the kicking game is a skill it takes some years to learn at the top level. Long did not have it to start with, like he did at the end when he ran everything.

Leon has only developed a kicking game over the last few years and Kyle well he was just as hit and miss as Gaskell.

Gaskell may have a stormer next week and Lomax a poor one or average one.

Either way they are not doing too bad. That's 2 games 2wins. We are now 2nd in the league (even though that maybe limited). Lets look to the positives from tonight.

Down to 11 men at one point and the boys held out.

A few players still to return 2 of them with more experience at running a side (pryce and Wilkin).

So things are on the up at last.

back to back wins great stuff.

Maybe, maybe not. But they are just both very inexperienced at this level. I do wish people would stop viewing them like they've been playing first grade for years, is all.

Oh, and stop being mean about Wello. He's gorgeous.

Saints did very well and could have had some more points. James Roby was fantastic, and Saints were too good on the night. We executed the plays very well and exploited the gaps. Saints had a mountain of possession and our kicking game was very good.

Looks like not everyone agrees with Saddened about the kicking game.

It's Saints fans best mate
I've always thought of McGuire as a good player, and I wouldn't normally wish injury on any player, but there was a certain hint of poetic justice to that.
Another classic:
You forgot to take off the "Saints Reduction Factor" when calculating the ban.

Standard suspension / Saints Reduction Factor = Actual ban for Saints player.

Therefore (2 / 3) = 0.666

0.666 < 1 therefore actual ban equals "less than 1 match".

Therefore ZERO.
Give the girl her dummy back.

Hope we can keep these two in an extended run in the side.

Lomax looks every bit the SL player and Gaskell has shown enough promise that he'll make the grade too. Both of them absolutely justify their places, with or without the Eastmond politics.

Personally i'm completely convinced on Lomax, a great player. Gaskell i think is a year younger? so may just need some final tweeks, but looks promising too. Gary Wheeler showed some very nice touches too, any chance he's not out for 6 weeks now?

Re: Lomax and Gaskell : Sat Mar 26, 2011 10:31 am
We have to remember that Lomax has been a first team player - albeit a bit-part one - for the best part of two years. That gives him a pretty big head start on Gaskell who is every inch a greenhorn. It's very unlikely that Lee will begin to find his feet until next season. Indeed, given the problems surrounding Saints this season it's a minor miracle he's been competitive - let alone one of the most creative players in Superleague.
