Re: Lomax and Gaskell : Sat Mar 26, 2011 12:07 am
For Gawd's sake, Saddened! Gaskell has now played in about nine - NINE! - first team games. Two of the first three he was played off the bench. This was probably his most pressurised game so far because everyone - everyone - knew Saints HAD to win this match. They had to put a marker down at home for the fans, for the league and for themselves. Gaskell tackled hard, he made some great passes and he kicked a couple of beauties. He was everywhere and kept having a go. No-one tonight put in the kind of show they put in at Leeds. Why should we expect Gaskell to? He is very, very inexperienced and is trying his best.
While Lomax was good, I thought he took on the line less than he did at Leeds. His kicking was poor. But yes, he also made some great breaks and worked hard too.
We shouldn't be expecting these guys to perform as if they were experienced pros. They are not. But the experience they are getting is of great value and will stand them in good stead for the future. We won the match tonight and we did that in part because we had two halfbacks prepared to engage, take on the line and work hard. We also have a fullback who is a total star.
