Bizarre decision IMO. Wellens is a player who could easily find himself out of the side altogether if a fullback who can catch, tackle and run is found. Wello in a world class team with strike players all over the place was a great comfort blanket, in the current team with it's sub-par players he's found wanting.
When was Wello found wanting last season exactly? And why should he find himself out of the side at all, never mind altogether? His only weakness is that he isn't Usain Bolt. Yet in spite of that he always seemed to be on the shoulder of the man with the ball last season, ready to take it forward.
Did you see the end of season review? Did you see the incredible catch he made against Hull KR at the Magic Weekend? I'd forgotten that one. Brilliant stuff.
So far as the captain is concerned, what Saints need is a leader. If Wello isn't a leader then he shouldn't be captain. He shouldn't be made captain just because he's been around the longest or because he's a local lad or even because everyone respects him. All those are great things and I think Wello's fab. But our captain should only be chosen based upon his leadership skill. Since we have lost Cunningham we need someone who can talk like Cunningham could talk, who can inspire, motivate, get them to dig themselves out of a hole, work harder, whatever is needed. Whoever is best at doing that should be our next captain, regardless of age, experience, ethnic origin or colour of boots.
