After making a promising start at Warrington with 2 starts from the bench followed by 2 full appearances Gary has since missed the last 8 games through injury and latterly lack of match fitness.

He was selected for Crusaders on dual reg at the weekend and according to someone on the Wire forum he's now out for 8 weeks with an injury sustained in that game. If that pans out he'll have been available for 4 of Warrington's first 20 Super League games. Even if he then put in a record breaking 7 game consecutive stint, he'd still only reach 40% availability over the season.

Does this provide some evidence that our much maligned fitness/conditioning setup isn't the problem? From what I've heard he had a lot to say about how we treated him, but I can't see much hope of a contract extension at Warrington now. Where next for Gary?

And what is Jamie Foster up to these days? I haven't seen him mentioned since he left Bradford? Can he really not get a contract with any RL or RU club or have I missed him signing somewhere?

It's very difficult to answer this question. No matter how tempting it is to say it's the club's fault or the player's "soft" - the fact remains that with a large enough data set (the total number of players registered at SL and lower league clubs) - statistical "oddities" which are way off the bell curve insofar as average number of games missed per season are concerned are not just likely - they are inevitable.

I'm not ruling out either possibility - but Gary Wheeler could well be one of those statistical oddities who is always in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Conversely, a player such as Jamie Peacock is at the other end of the spectrum. It's easy to fall for the narrative that he's just "that bit tougher" than other players. He could well be. But it could also be true that he's just that bit luckier.

Some players will always be in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's one of life's cruel truisms.

Look at Scully. There was no one harder, but the injuries just started racking up and he retired at, what, 28(?).
