Lee Briers to play for Swinton : Tue Apr 30, 2013 9:24 pm  

I see Wire are really utilising the dual reg system by having Lee Briers play for Swinton against Leigh this week. Adrian Morley expected to play for them soon as well. Amazing really, that game will have two sides with better half backs than we have.

Surely there should be an age limit on dual reg players?

Not against Leigh its against whitehaven on Prem sports Thursday night

yep but it would be tricky as the idiots running our game started by getting rid of reserve teams then followed it up by cocking up its replacement. Players coming back from injury would have nowhere to get match fit or test there injury's out

add to that the problem with developing players who arnt superstars by the time they hit 20.. but I suppose it's only those useless positions nobody needs like halfbacks and props.

This is why the dual reg rule is stupid. There should be an age limit, of say, 23, therefore it's directed at developing and giving game time to young players.

I don't agree. It gives Briers, who's been out injured for ages, a chance to get match fit, it gives Chamionship speccies a chance to see a real star play for their team and it gives the swinton players chance to benifit from running out with a vastly experienced player.

And it gives Swinton an unfair advantage over Whitehaven. You forgot that bit!

But then it's doing young Swinton players out of a game, for someone who may not be getting a game in Super League. I know, in this case Briers was injured, but I still think an age limit should be in place, e.g. to stop the likes of Ian Kirke playing for Hunslet, Paul Wood playing for Swinton and even Gardner playing for Whitehaven, as has been the case this season.

I understand that, but rather than an age limit, I'd just put a limit on the number of dual reg players allowed to turn out in the same week

*edit* Maybe 1 player over 23 allowed per week + another couple of under 23s.

Maybe, but Whitehaven can have dual reg players aswell - like the mighty Hand. We don't have a strong enough squad to send Roby or Lomax there when they're recovering, of course, so I guess its just a case of Swinton having a better club partner than us.

Funny thing is, I bet (some of) the Whitehaven players will relish playing against a big name like Briers.

I don't like what they've done with the youth teams, but I do think that dual reg is a much better situation than a lot of people make out.
