Could the incident with Matty Smith have resulted in a Penalty Try?

The Wigan player was off-side and kicked it out when a Saints player was bearing down and WOULD have nbeen able tp pick it up and score?

I'm not sure of the actually wording of the rule is it "in the process of scoring a try" which means not?

Yeah probably not as the ball was over the line in the field of play. Had it been on the line or in the in goal then it would have been. Its the most obvious yellow card you will ever see though, the ref leaving LMS on at the end probably meant he could see he made a mistake there.

Not a 100 % on this but,

If it was in goal, then it would not be a penalty as I don't think you can forward pass or be offside in your own in goal. It's only because the ball was in the field of play that he becomes offside.

Either way not going to make a big deal of it, lets call it evens for the clough none try.

Not evens though. Since when has tackling a player without the ball who is on the way to his own tryline ok? Tomkins should have been binned for a professional foul on Meli in the first half. So Silverdud owed us at least two.

I don't think we can say who tackled who on that one, both players went for the tackle, both left the ball to the other man.

You can't penalise both for tackling each other without the ball.

Eh? I mean the time when Meli was racing down the line to score off a kick and Tomkins just tackled him, stopping him from possibly getting to the ball to score a try. Meli just stood there looking bemused and the ref did nothing. Tomkins should have walked.

I agree with that,i thought Tomkins made no effort for the ball and just went to stop Meli,should of been a yellow.It was a fast flowing game and entertaining,but you need to make the big calls,LMS should of been bined towards the end as well.

I agree. What with that and his knock ons he was a liability today. Just what we didn't need with everything else.

I think when you look at it again, both Tomkins and Meli don't go for the ball, the ball is about a meter to the side of them, no one reaches for the ball they just go at each other. If you want a penalty you have to actually attempt to get the ball. Meli had run by it, by the time Tomkins laid a finger on him.

You can't be offside in-goal. You can forward pass and knock-on, however.
