Is it just me or do Saints play really dull rugby? I watched the match from Sunday back tonight. I was bored at the game - not the first time by far this season - and so I thought if I watched it from a side on view maybe that would make it more interesting. But I found us as boring from the side as I did from the front. We are so predictable and so lacking in any form of inventiveness. I saw more inventiveness in the Wakey side on Monday night.
I even find the team selection boring. It's the same every week. Completely predictable.
I thought we played some very entertaining attacking Rugby in the opening 20 minutes. We lost some go forward, when the 2 big guys went off and Huddersfield got a bit of confidence back. Personally I think the crowd are actually a bit boring. We scored lots of points and there was very little get up and go from the crowd.
I think it's partially down to the new surroundings and to be honest I was expecting it. If anyone remembers back to Central Park and the drop off in atmosphere when Wigan moved to the pie dome. It took them the best part of 10 years to get a good atmosphere back. People are not next to those who they have been with for decades and so people are more subdue it's a natural response. When the Saints came out I was in the south stand stood up doing my usual standing ovation, but felt I was getting in the way of the sandwich brigade who barely clapped the team out.
Also the lack of an away support or reasonable competitive team leads to a drop in atmosphere too.
Recalling the Hull game which we lost, that was exciting and the crowd were more up but that was due to us not playing well and the game being close and a reasonable number of away fans.
If that game had been at KR, eveyone close to the pitch with 12k on and a cracking scoreline the place would have been more jumping, but even so, with the game over after 20 mins and no away support to speak of, it still would have been a quieter 2nd half.
