I do wonder whether we've made the right decisions with Armstrong. It's clear that he has scoring power (he's demonstrated it in his brief first team career) and that's one of the best attributes you can pin to any player. Given Gardner and Meli's creaky form over the last two years I'm surprised we haven't given Tom more of a chance. I'm sure there's something about him we don't like the look of. Perhaps he's weak under the high ball. Perhaps he's slow on the turn. Or perhaps he just doesn't have the necessary level of professionalism. All such criticism would be understandable if it
weren't for the fact that the same accusations have been leveled at Gardner and/or Meli throughout their careers. It's impossible to coach talent. But there are many other facets of the game that can be and I suspect a strong leader might be able to turn Tom, at the very least, into a credible first team candidate who, if he did nothing else, would force the likes of Meli and Gardner (the latter of which has never really been put under pressure for his position) to look over the shoulders and buck up.
