felt for matty tonight,he really did struggle with his kicking game,young sam must have thought xmas had come early,with the amount that went straight down his throat!chin up matty

you can see why he is at Salford really and surplus to Saints requirements.

He is a solid honest pro who can do a job, but isnt really the quality of half you want playing in a GF

Matty Smith has had all of five weeks with us. He had not even played in a derby before, much less a derby at Old Trafford. He was probably as nervous as crap and he also had the torrid experience of playing when Saints couldn't defend, were dropping the ball, were giving away penalties, had a half baked forward pack and had another halfback who isn't a halfback in a million years.

He kicked a beauty of a kick down my end. He was really going at the line for about the last 15 minutes. Had he had more support from the regular players he may have found his nerve earlier.

Would hate to think thate saints fans will be blaming him in anyway shape or form on his performance tonight,at the end of the day the whole saints team was poor and out classed by a wigan side,who lets all be honest over the course of the season have deserved the title!matty came in and performed like a true pro for you,and i hope when we meet next year he gets a good ovation from the saints faithfull..

All these Salford fans supporting saints tonight must have put the mockers on you.

Sat in the Stretford End a Saints supporter for the evening , Wigan got off to a dream start, pinned you down in you own 40 for most of the first half, they had a choice of three field kickers either hitting the high bomb or going for territory , their completion rate was impressive , the penalty count was stacking in favour of Wigan too, yet you only went in 10 points adrift at he break.

It could've been different had all your chances stuck to keep the pressure on Wigan and force them into errors , touble is dispite the best efforts of Graham, Matty Smith and Lomax were on the back foot and under pressure for most of the game . Though Smith bombed one good chance I thought he was by no means your worst player . He's played your play-off games all with different half back partners and it was his first major final . I'm more than happy he'll be a Salford player next season.

Spot on. And he's been exposed to Potter's coaching, too, which will have hampered him. It wasn't only his first major final, it was his first derby - and they have pressures all of their own. I haven't changed my view about Smith. I'm sad we let him go. I hope today hasn't damaged his confidence.

I was worried for Matty before tonight because he shot himself in the foot by putting in such a great performance against Warrington. But our pack performed well against Warrington and that's what a halfback needs. Tonight, our pack was woeful. It didn't help that Potter had yet again made changes to the line up, so leaving us not knowing who was playing where. (I'm so glad he is going).

Undoubtedly some people will criticise Matty and probably think we are right in letting him go. I'm not one of them. It was a big ask for him and he had no support out there tonight.

And I definitely agree that he wasn't our poorest player! Quite a few line up for that award. I'd say he was probably bloody nervous out there and he should have been supported.

He'll definitely get a welcome from me. I still wish we'd kept him.

He's done ok since he came back and always tried his best but other than the wolves game he has been poor.

We don't see him until last tackle and then he puts in poor kick.

Not good enough for saints but wish him all the best with the reds next year.
